Shinji Hirako was the Captain of the Shinigami's 5th Division. He sensed early on that Aizen was not to be trusted, so he made Aizen his Vice Captain in order to keep a close eye on him. Like everyone else, Shinji had no idea what Aizen's zanpakuto was truly capable of. Aizen used his Shikai to fool Shinji and other Shinigami into thinking that Aizen was always following right behind his Captain. In reality, it was a completely different person that was merely pretending to be Vice Captain Aizen.
He wanted to combine both Shinigami and Hollow powers, thus forcing his victims to go through hollowfication. Urahara intervenes and keeps Aizen from taking their lives at that moment, but Aizen did not seem to make much of an effort to go after them. Thanks to this, this group of Visored who each had the same power level as a Captain were able to join the fight against the Espada, turning the tide in Soul Society's favor.
Rukia's appearance in the world of the living was a crucial moment in the series. This way, she was guaranteed to meet Ichigo, and was also likely to pass her power on to him in order to protect him. In turn, Urahara made Rukia a gigai in which he hid the Hogyoku. Although Urahara thought it would be the best place to hide it, Aizen managed to foresee this plan of action ages before it happened. Although Aizen split up the Shinigami army by doing this, he split up his own army as well.
He was also running a risk by bringing Orihime to Hueco Mundo. So Urahara needed to hide the hogyoku inside a soul. In the same way that Voldemort totally should have made his horcruxes grains of sand on random beaches. But anyway. He is a shinigami, after all.
Bound to protect humans. His plan, as he once described it, was to stow the hogyoku in Rukia and then let the gigai suck away all of her power until she was just a human.
So maybe using a human to begin with was impossible. Maybe only the soul of a shinigami would be strong enough to contain the hogyoku or something like that. I gotta get this hogyoku thing hidden! Welcome to the forums! Also to be noted that the entire birth of Ichigo is a causality of Aizen's earlier experimentation and he mentions that he has been monitoring Ichigo for a long time. I know I'm a couple years late but I just watched the episode and Aizen does indeed say that Urahara hid the Hogyoku in a soul and that by the time Aizen realised it was in Rukia, she had already escaped to the human world.
So the guy who got downvoted was right, and the guy who got upvoted is wrong. The rest is true though, he did give Rukia the gigai that drained her powers and he did 'manipulate' and help the crew to save Rukia because he knew Aizen was after her.
Hey I know I'm waaaaaaaaaaay late but I've just rewatched the anime for like 4th time and yes, Aizen said that he realized the Hogyoku was with Rukia after she had left for Karakura town back then.
Did anyone listen to Aizen's speech? The Hogyoku was inside Rukia before she even met Ichigo. In fact, according to his concept, it has been inside of her since she was a child.
